details
Sessions 1 - 4 (90 minutes each)
Session 5 (20 minutes)
- At the beginning of the first session, each participant is required to register at www.apps4efl.com, providing the following information: first and surname, e-mail address, age, gender, year of study, academic major, and English level.
- There are four treatments administered by the website: One for each of the three vocabulary apps, and a control. Each of the four treatments are automatically administered by the website in a random order for each participant.
- For each of the sessions 1 - 4, a list of 10 comprehension questions are shown to the user, the user is asked to read through them, but unable to submit answers. A 10-minute TED Talks video is then shown to the student. The video is shown only once. When the video is finished, the student answers the 10 comprehension questions displayed earlier.
- The participant then takes a pre-test on 20 NAWL words taken from the TED video script. After that the student studies those target words for 20 minutes using the treatment app. This is followed by an immediate post-test (identical to the pre-test).
- At the end of the first session, there is no delayed post-test.
- At the beginning of sessions 2-5, there is a delayed post-test, containing the target vocabulary from the previous session.
Session 5 (20 minutes)
- The last session consists of a delayed post-test only. There is no computer app treatment or TED Talk video.
